Big Buddha Poncho

Rose Sparkle PonchoNow the idea of this month is to shop in one’s own closet, however there are a few exceptions to the rule – its damn near impossible to do a “no-shop” when you work in fashion retail!! 🙂

Although I have been practising being very brutal with myself, thinking over items for considerable time before making a decision: Will I wear this? Is it worth the price? Will it go with what I already own? How unique is it? Asking ourselves questions like this any time we are shopping is a great way to make your budget that much easier. Our homes are full of things we don’t need, impulse buys and things we should have returned to the store. All in all we shouldn’t be so lazy, think before you do things that effect your cash flow.

Rose Sparkle PonchoI slipped up at the store (for my No Shop September) when this poncho style top came in, but everything about it screams me: the rosey coral tones, the hint of sparkle, the unique-edgy-ness of it all. For $10 I thought it would be a good idea to snatch up something to wear to work when the season starts to change.

Thrift Gone Wild

Leopard PrintLeopard Print

Now in working at a consignment store we receive a wide variety of clothing and I’ve seen things you can’t imagine that people still have shoved in their closets. I have always rolled my eyes when velvet and animal prints show their ugly faces in the backroom. The ladies love them (a certain generation of course) but they really do love the wild prints and fabrics.

During my latest half price day thrifting trip in Ottawa I discovered this leopard print top by H&M. Naturally I just seem to love everything that is H&M – I now laugh when I’m drawn to something “Oh look, its H&M, go figure!” This top should never have caught my eye. With everything I believe in my interest in this top makes no sense. Unless of course, my age is becoming apparent and I’ve hit that age where (gasp!) I am being attracted to prints like this!

Haha in all seriousness though, I was surprised at how much I liked the top, but we must also take into consideration the feel, the cut, the print itself and naturally the styling of said top to keep it fresh and modern.

I surprised a lot of people when I arrived at work wearing this top, gold jewellery and vibrant coral red shorts. It was really fun but also very unique!

Striped Maxi

Xhilaration MaxiDon’t you love half price deals?! I picked up this gorgeous maxi by Xhilaration yesterday at Value Village for their two day super savers sale for only $5! It was one of those daring days when I just had to have it, no interest in trying it on because quite frankly, I figured I could alter it if need be. When I put it on for work in the morning I was beyond thrilled that it fits perfectly! Not a single alteration required!!

Now I know Xhilaration is available for pretty cheap at Target so I kept that in mind when thinking about the price… but for $5? You don’t have to think too hard! To finish the look I paired it with bright turquoise accessories and new go-to Wild Diva gladiator sandals.

Oversized SweaterBecause I work in an air-conditioned environment, I came prepared with an alterative look: an over sized black knit sweater top!

Stunning Royal Blue

Stunning Royal BlueNow this look is was a happy accident, and surprisingly far classier than I expected! I have had both pieces for a little while and had not yet worn either one as I didn’t know how to piece it together. Basically everything I tried didn’t work because this top by H&M is very long and I don’t do the legging look very well. This is actually paired with a long maxi skirt also by H&M. As it turns out the solution to both issues was that they needed each other! Fortunately I happened to realize they were both from H&M, so one could only guess that they were the same shade of royal blue.

This is my latest favourite outfit because its easy to put together, it can be dressed up or down, and it has received by far the most compliments of anything I’ve worn to date!

Polka dots

Statement Pieces2014-08-24-011

Let me introduce you to my very first peplum top! I have seen this style on other women and its pretty hit and miss, the style doesn’t suit everyone so I was a little hesitant to try it out. It was first and foremost the polka dots that had captured my attention. Because I’m a strong believer that you don’t know until you try, I conveniently had on the perfect pair of jeggings by Jones New York at the time which makes this top pop!

As much as I’d like to classify Cleo as an “older” brand, one that is typically not worn by my generation, this beautiful, not to mention super comfortable top completely proves me wrong! I also took some inspiration from my favourite follows on Instagram by finishing the outfit with a really bold blue statement necklace.

Grey Linen Pants

Grey Linen PantsTGIF to all the thrift lovers out there! Today’s look is a repeat but I altered these NOA linen pants into capris because the length bothered me. I simply rolled them up to a length I was happy with, tacked with a few pins and then machine sewed the cuffs in place. I felt like adding a cuff made it a little more exciting than a straight hem.

I paired the new capri with an H&M floral blouse which I also altered in a similar way. Often I find our shoppers at the store are rolling their sleeves up, which gets me to thinking about any time I’ve worn a long sleeved top or jacket. I recently altered all of my blazers to be 3/4 length in the sleeve – for this very reason. They are much lighter and more flattering with a shorter sleeve. For this blouse, the long sleeve didn’t roll due to its light silky nature – so I finally decided to chop off the excess and add a hem.

And lastly, finished this fun outfit with a mini belt, flip flops and statement necklace!

Pink Saturday!

20140719-224932.jpgToday once again I felt very feminine and wanted uplifting colours to go with the white denim shorts I had just altered – stay tuned for the tutorial! I opted for a light weight pink blouse by Joe Fresh, combined with a floral cardigan by St. John’s Bay.

This I so far the first floral cardi I’ve been able to thrift that is modern but trendy at the same time. I haven’t worn hot pink in quite some time! I was just running errands today so I didn’t put too much thought into the outfit, although sometimes I think that’s when looks are most successful!

I received quite a few compliments on my outfit today from complete strangers! It’s so uplifting when someone goes out of their way to tell you something positive. It stays with you for the rest of the day! It has always been a goal of mine, call it good karma if you will, to compliment one person every day. Share the love!

Navy Blue Blouse

Gold & NavyMixed Prints

Two looks, same blouse! Last month I featured this navy blue blouse by Joe Fresh with a bold gold chain print and paired it with a white and blue pinstripe skirt by Twik. It was an experiment with mixing prints which turned into a big success. This blouse I did alter, it was a long sleeve which I am usually okay with but this one had that billowy base with a button. It just makes the blouse look dated or too cutesy.
With a simple hem job I turned it into a fabulously stylish 3/4 sleeve blouse. The second look features the same tucked in style with a pair of dark denim shorts by Cache with a gorgeous gold button detail. Can you tell I’ve been really into button details lately? The pinstripe skirt has unique one-up buttons too! Its definitely an easy top to accessories due to the gold chain print, a big bold gold necklace works quite well!

Parisian Inspired Looks

blackwhitepinstripesRight now black and white stripes are HUGE in my summer wardrobe! Anything with stripes that comes into the store I get all giggly! If you’re like me and you’ve always been afraid of stripes, fear no longer! I’ve put together three looks recently that are simple, fun and Parisian inspired that show how you can easily wear stripes – if they are the right stripes!

This top is a beautiful long sleeved dark navy and white striped number by Jones New York – I was a sucker for the gold button detail on the shoulders! Black capris by Le Chateau, low heel wedges by American Eagle paired with red acccessories! This look was extremely flattering especially for my wide hips! Who knew?

blackwhiteredparisian 20140618-180645.jpg

One of my faves lately, a long pinstripe maxi skirt with no label, white tshirt by Reitmans (again with shoulder buttons!), mini belt, new flats from ACo and mixed gold white and black bangles. Now this is everyone’s favourite new dress by La Classe Couture, although painfully short, I simply chopped a pair of black leggings into shorts and voila! I have been painting flats lately and these used to be coral but was itching for a pair of red ones. Couldn’t find any at the Ardene or thrifting so I decided to paint these up!

Easy Preppy Looks

orangestripesIt seems lately I have been looking for a more simple, easy to throw together look that mixes prints or fabrics. In my early high school days I always thought GAP was the cream of the crop. If I had found anything with that label thrifting it was a dream come true. Much like Abercrombie models, I seemed to have this idea that the girls that wore GAP were successful and had their lives sorted out. Its what I idolized. To this day, I still think women who wear GAP clothing put themselves together nicely. Maybe its because their clothing is simple, subtle patterns if any and have nice lines.

As you know from reading my blog, I’m not longer envious of those in GAP clothing but rather the suggested style that these women had. Every now and again I like a look that is a little more casual but clean cut. Here are two examples of fun preppy meets casual looks! The first look is a cozy long sleeved (rolled up naturally!) white and orange knit top by GAP, vintage acrylic beads, denim capris by Jones New York and ACo flats. I was debating whether this outfit would be too warm for the summer but once I arrived at the store the air conditioning reminded me!

greywhitestripes The second outfit came together quite randomly as I had been given these Martin Richards board shorts last week and found them to be super comfortable – unfortunately as per the usual – way too big at the top. So sitting on the floor in my wardrobe room I had to sew a 1 inch deep dart down the back after removing all the labeling which always seems to be where I need to stitch. Trimming the excess it is a much more flattering pair of shorts! The top is a 3/4 sleeved white and grey striped top by Joe Fresh and a very soft denim overshirt by GAP.

The Casual Prep Look

Casual Preppy LookLately I’ve been seeing some great simple looks on Instagram featuring plain denim shirts, exciting bottoms and statement jewellery. This is my first attempt at recreating the look with a pop of bright coral shorts by GAP, denim pinstripe shirt by American Eagle Outfitters and a gold loop necklace. Not only was it easy to throw together but it was really comfortable for work.

Black, White and Gold

Black, White & GoldI like to refer to this look as “edgy meets high fashion”! I will admit this outfit didn’t come all that easily as it was probably the tenth outfit I attempted to assemble that morning! Things don’t always fall into place but I am exceptionally thrilled with how this look turned out in the end. Due to my 5’2 stature I did need to do some hemming to this maxi skirt before I could wear it. Tall girls need things longer, short girls need things shorter. Sigh!

Gold Coin Necklace
I was unsure for probably two weeks about what would work with this skirt due to it’s black and white pinstripe. I originally thought a bright coloured blouse or shirt but none of those were quite right. I then decided to paw through my tops one by one and found this black one with gold dots. Although the dots are subtle I think it is a very cute mix of patterns.

American Eagle Low Heel Wedges I thrifted these fabulous American Eagle Outfitters low heel wedge pumps last week in the children’s section of Value Village – only $3.99! As depressing as it is for me to sift through the sparkles and Hannah Montana sandals, occasionally I do find the perfect gems such as these and of course my favourite gemstone toe flats by GAP Kids. Oh and yes I did notice that the sole of these shoes match the skirt perfectly but it certainly was not planned!
