Lessons of 2015

Here we are at another year’s end, saying goodbye to 2015 when it feels like yesterday we were saying hello. Did I accomplish everything I set out to? I did not set any concrete resolutions as I do not believe we can hold tightly to them, I do not like putting weight on my shoulders that is not necessary. “Goals” shouldn’t be a pedestal.

I now sit with a cup of cocoa, reflecting on the past year and pondering the future. I managed to sneak two tropical vacations into this year, a few thrifting trips to Ottawa, a trip to the bead stores in Toronto once or twice. I added a full time yoga routine into the mix as well as a second job increasing my work days to 12 hours. Continue Reading

Camo Print

camoprintThis outfit is iconic, as many of you probably don’t know, I abhor camo print. I don’t like hunting, I don’t like camouflage, I dislike it being worn as normal clothing. I was drawn to this blouse however, despite my dislike of the print – in this particular piece it doesn’t bother me at all in fact I was drawn to it because I love green.

Like almost every small blouse I try on lately, this one is no different, I couldn’t get my bicep into the sleeve. Without hesitation I chopped the sleeve off this one too and wouldn’t you know it, instantly fits perfect. Everything is easier in sleeveless!

This blouse was fun to play up with jewellery as I have a few stackable bracelets in turquoise, green and brown tones as well as a matching necklace I made a few years back.

Light Rose

lightpinkgrey There was a year, not too long ago, that I went to the thrift store and picked up a whole bunch of sweater tunics, I think about the time leggings first started being popular. I have since grown a strong dislike of them as I am just too curvy and its not a flattering look on me. However, every year I cleanse my closet and wonder if I should get rid of them or if I’m going to wear them… if they are frumpy or flattering… They are an item that I both love and hate.

I find this light rose one to be the only one I actually wear as it’s light, but could be warm if layered up nicely. It might be the first time I’ve worn it this season, because I finally found the perfect scarf to pair it with! This beauty came into the store this week, not quite long enough for infinity – but really attractive as a full knotted. Best of all this soft rose colour matches my nude pumps almost perfectly!

Rockin’ 30

To celebrate my 30th birthday I decided to book a reservation at a classy restaurant and invite my closest girlfriends. What a night! The girls spoiled me with wonderful cards and plenty of wine! Did I mention the Value Village gift certificates?? They know me so well.

For this fabulous evening I went a little dressy, but not too much! I wore this super comfortable magenta dress, jean jacket and my multi strand necklace from the Shopping Channel. No I didn’t buy it from SC, I just looked it up out of curiosity! Continue Reading

Neutrals & Denim

denimivorymixTo be perfectly honest, sometimes I just find the outfit to match the jewellery! I have often suggested this to our customers at the Store. They love a necklace but they have no idea what they would wear with it, same goes for a pair of boots. Yes they are a statement, but there is always a ton of different outfits that can match!

This outfit I put together for an evening holiday show I was participating in with my new line of jewellery OOAK. I wore it to a previous show with a royal blue dress and oatmeal coloured blazer – but I didn’t want to repeat in case we had return shoppers. So this style is more casual, but made to look dressy with the belted waist and pumps.

Modern Business Wear

businesswear2My least favourite term is “business casual” as really this could mean a lot of things to different people. For me the typical dress pant, fitted solid colour shirt and blazer makes for one heck of a boring outfit. So I’d like to show you my twist on the business look!

My philosophy is, if you have the basics – all you need is a variety of beautiful blouses! A simple long sleeve black blazer that fits to a “t” should be a staple in your wardrobe. For me, I go for a skinny leg dark black jegging instead of a wider leg dress pant based on my shape. It creates a more flattering look for my wide hips and bum if I go narrow toward my ankle. Sweater Dress Weather

bananarepublicsweaterdressI think I found one heck of a deal last week when I came across this sweater dress by Banana Republic at Value Village. Originally $12.99, minus 30% off coupon I got it for under $10. Banana Republic for under $10?! BR dresses run from $150 to $200 typically, even on sale they’re riding the fine line around $100.

As much as I can lose my faith in the pricing at VV, this one reassures me that there are still deals to be found! It had a few flaws on the arms which is common practice for sweaters they do get bally when they catch on things. Simple fix? Just snip them off!

This is the ultimate cozy winter dress, with a soft cowl style neck, long sleeves and ends just above the knee. A denim jacket adds that extra splash of colour on this overall tan palette, with a wrapped scarf for added detail.

Full Colour or Bust!

brightfloralskirt Ah yes, a new favourite! I’m sure I say this in every post, but its okay to have a ton of favourite newly-created looks!

Much like most of my other outfits, these pieces had to be altered in order to suit my body shape. This New York & Co floral skirt really didn’t fit at all when I tried it on, but every now and then there are pieces that you just have to have no matter how much work they will involve in the end. I took it in two inches to make it a high waisted style and brought up the hem about the same amount so it came closer to the knee. Anything past the knee on my height makes me look frumpy.

Western Inspired

westerninspired I’m not what I would call a country girl by any standard, although I did grow up in the country. I am however, a fan of the style attributed to the boonies where I once resided. Layers and warm tones, hints of denim and structured boots.

This outfit makes me think western because of the mixed denims and brick red scarf. I haven’t worn this scarf in a long time, although I swore by it last year in Australia. It just added that something extra to every simple top. I have a long Stella & Dot necklace that I had thrifted last year that compliments the colours perfectly, the real challenge is keeping it untangled!
