Favourite Fall Looks

My favourite season is upon us it seems, after a record breaking week of scorching heat last week the temperature has shifted to 2 in the morning, 18 by the afternoon. In spring we think of it as being almost tropical… but in fall we feel chilled to the bone. This week is no exception, I’ve been frozen at work as the sun doesn’t hit the windows enough to warm the office!

I love the fabrics of autumn, the soft knits, layering styles and of course, skinny jeans with ankle booties! I am actually looking forward to the big summer to autumn transition in my closet, it’ll be a huge job when I decide to bite the bullet and do the flip! For now its still occasionally warm enough for sandals so I’ve left it as is. I do need to start the laundry prep for the new season, scarves and sweaters being the big one. There’s just something about them sitting folded up in a rubbermaid bin for 6 months that gives them a smell that is less than admirable.

Step two, start planning new exciting wardrobe changes! Figuring out what my new style will be for the upcoming season!

My Scarf Obsession

Its no surprise that I love scarves! Scarves of all shapes and sizes! No that’s not true I like long scarves, infinity, pashmina, knits… Although I love the flight attendant look of a small silk scarf tied at the neck, I have yet to try that style out. Long flowing pashminas in an array of colours and prints are my favourite accessory.

I sometimes thrift scarves that I only wear once or twice, because of the colour or the print. Something about them is just too difficult to blend into my wardrobe and I am past saving items for the perfect match. Sometimes that “match” never comes! Such a thing happened recently when I arrived at work and realized I hated my outfit to the point of being really uncomfortable. The scarf I just picked up the week before full of lush pinks and tans was lovely but it just doesn’t go with anything I own… and that’s okay! I don’t need a hundred scarves!

I’ve been asked recently to do a video of styling scarves, I haven’t made it yet but I was noticing a few different ways I wear them in my OOTD’s on Instagram so I thought I would share a few of my favourites recently. Scarves are an easy fun accessory that can be worn alone or with a necklace underneath. Depending on the top or the look I want to achieve, they can be wrapped, tied or hang long.

Transitioning Your Wardrobe

turquoisereptilecombo Spring and Fall are challenging times in the year, or at least in Ontario, because the weather fluctuates so greatly. One day its warm the next its cold. It becomes very hard to judge what to wear. The mornings are chilly and the afternoons are warm. As much as people complain about this time in the year I actually quite like it because of how I can layer my outfits. I like wearing more spring-summer type shoes, but prefer the layering effect of cooler weather.

yellowgreycomboIn preparing myself for this fluctuating season, I remove the heaviest items – the thick knits that I wear in the winter when its -20 degrees outside. I switch to lighter knits, blazers and double up on my blouse/camisole combos. Scarves are a great way to stay warm as the weather changes as I find when your neck is warm, your body maintains a warmer temperature. I have recently styled up some new looks for this awkward transition featuring lighter blouses paired with fun bottoms and 3/4 sleeve blazers.

I tend to wear panty-hose all year round with my skirts and dresses just so my legs are warmer and it gives a nicer finish. My feet however tend to be cold, but I much before the look and feel of this batch of shoes compared to winter boots that have my feet aching by the end of the day.

My number one is layers and accessories. An outfit really comes together when you have the finishing touches. I have tried to be a little more daring with my looks lately as well, creating unique colour combinations and playing with textures. For instance, I fell in love with this rich turquoise blouse and knew I had a great bauble necklace by Lia Sophia that would be perfect – unfortunately I had no idea what to pair it with. I was staring blankly at my bottoms and didn’t feel very enthused until I noticed my reptile skirt that I altered previously. To bring out the brown tones in the necklace the skirt really tied it all together. Who knew?
