Mixing Fabrics

Today I’m trying a whole new look with some newly thrifted pieces. As you know not a fan of leggings but these I would wear more like pants because they’re super cool! I’ve always wanted pleather pants to give outfits that extra oomph! Last week this Lululemon wrap scarf-poncho was consigned at the store and it was so unique I had to have it and give styling it a whirl!

I look through the leggings at Value Village occasionally when I go but usually they are super tiny, really worn or very bright patterns. I often don’t have luck when I go thrifting specifically for an item, conveniently I was looking for a swimsuit (and found one!) and also spotted these bad boys. From Dynamite, a really nice sturdy fabric that as my employee observed, blend almost seamlessly into my boots!

Its kind of a cool look, simple and easy to style.

Camo Print

camoprintThis outfit is iconic, as many of you probably don’t know, I abhor camo print. I don’t like hunting, I don’t like camouflage, I dislike it being worn as normal clothing. I was drawn to this blouse however, despite my dislike of the print – in this particular piece it doesn’t bother me at all in fact I was drawn to it because I love green.

Like almost every small blouse I try on lately, this one is no different, I couldn’t get my bicep into the sleeve. Without hesitation I chopped the sleeve off this one too and wouldn’t you know it, instantly fits perfect. Everything is easier in sleeveless!

This blouse was fun to play up with jewellery as I have a few stackable bracelets in turquoise, green and brown tones as well as a matching necklace I made a few years back.

Modern Business Wear

businesswear2My least favourite term is “business casual” as really this could mean a lot of things to different people. For me the typical dress pant, fitted solid colour shirt and blazer makes for one heck of a boring outfit. So I’d like to show you my twist on the business look!

My philosophy is, if you have the basics – all you need is a variety of beautiful blouses! A simple long sleeve black blazer that fits to a “t” should be a staple in your wardrobe. For me, I go for a skinny leg dark black jegging instead of a wider leg dress pant based on my shape. It creates a more flattering look for my wide hips and bum if I go narrow toward my ankle. Neon Pink

hotpinkblackscarf I think I say this every day, but this colour is my new favourite! In fact, anything neon, much like my latest purse thrift! Although my skin tone is not exactly natural (thank you bronzer!) anything fluorescent or neon really pops against it. I received a ton of compliments on this outfit because of its bold colour.

To all the women that feel you need to go dark in the winter, I give you this outfit! I expect all year long I will be promoting thrilling colour and bold statement pieces. Why go dark when you can go bright?!

Last week I picked up this neon knit top by Gap at the Store, which I had just brought with me in case I was cold – but it ended up being a great addition to this outfit! Underneath it all is a half price white blouse by Banana Republic (from Value Village’s half price sale this month) and a simple black pencil skirt. This super fun scarf was also in my bag of goodies from the half price sale, only $2!

Haute in August

hauteaugust2 Now you know me, I am not really big on doing what everyone else is doing, however, every now and again pigs do fly. I noticed on Instagram there were a few girls across the States that were sporting black and white stripes with army green (or khaki green as I call it!) Quickly I learned that it was a trend for the week of August 10th sporting this green colour. Wish I still had my favourite khakis I had thrifted many moons ago that I destroyed quite accidentally on my journey back from out west. They would have perfectly rocked this trend!

hauteaugust1 So here it is, my attempt at the army vest trend! Snatched up this Dressbarn number at Value Village on their half price day, a basic striped t-shirt by American Dream and Gap shorts. Nothing too fancy but a really unique and fun way to style these pieces.

Thank you to whoever came up with this very cool combination!

Fabulous New Bag

neonpurse I tried out a new trend yesterday and I would like to proudly say I rocked it! Although the outfit itself is a combination I’ve never tried before, the new neon bag I snatched up at Value Village really seals the deal on this one! I’ve officially decided this is my favourite colour of the month!

It really makes this whole monochromatic look pop. I saw on Instagram recently women sporting shorts with their blazers – so I thought it was worth a try. The main reason for wearing it was quite simply, the AC in the store is way too cold for me! I’ve said it a hundred times but blazers are awesome, especially this simply tailored RW&Co 3/4 sleeve one. I also have it in a dark sage green!

blackwhitebracelets I also wanted to comment on my jewellery for this outfit. It worked so perfectly with the outfit, a fun blend of sparkle and attitude! As part of my adventure in eBay shopping, these two pieces were among my favourites from the latest shipment.

Leopard Envy

leopard It may not look like it, but I spend a considerable amount of time ensuring everything in my outfit flows from my hair to my ears, neck to wrist, top to bottom… Some days I spend less and just wing it, other days its very calculated. I like to joke that every year (heck every week!) I change my interests and style to keep myself rejuvenated. Last year I hated yellow, this year I love it. Same can be said for leopard print, or any sort of animal print for that matter. I think I had it reserved in my mind all these years as being for women that are of an older generation as usually I would see it in vibrant zebra designs with random sequins (a la TanJay or Alia)…

Certainly not my taste, but more and more recently I am being drawn to subtle animal print just as a print in general. I would feel the same if it were flowers or symbols of any kind. It adds excitement to an outfit much like my statement necklaces do. In this particular outfit the shirt is both simple but loud at the same time. The colour palette is subdued but styled in such a way that it is business casual. You know me, jewellery makes every outfit pop!

A Hint of Plaid

PlaidI think a number of my ex-boyfriends would die laughing if they saw this post… the girl that hates plaid is wearing two outfits featuring plaid! Like I often say, my style and interest changes constantly. What I love one year, I’ll hate the next. Today I like pink tomorrow it’s green.

Although it isn’t my favourite thing on this planet, I do enjoy a more casual look with a simple plaid shirt that I can style up with big jewellery. If I hadn’t of been sick on St. Patrick’s Day this year I would have had the greatest outfit lined up! Emerald green and royal blue plaid… there’s always next year I suppose if I still have the shirt!

plaid2The key for wearing plaid shirts (based on my body type) is picking a size larger than my other shirts. This style needs to be more loose fitting with sleeves that can be easily rolled up. My original plan for these was to wear a light knit cardigan or sweater over top through the winter but the look hasn’t been quite right.

A New Sleek Style

MINTBLACKSometimes I am slow to take on new trends if I even dabble with them at all. A lot of times fads are simply overdone and they become either a tight disaster or a sloppy mess compared to the original. I tend to look at the positive aspects of the upcoming trends and incorporate it into the style I already have. My mother is a petite woman and pulls off the leggings-with-tunic top very well. She has this artsy unique way of combining pieces.

I had worn leggings in the beginning when they became the latest craze, but I found people would start making remarks that suggested I was dressing like my mother. Not that it is by any means a negative, I simply do not like being compared to the style’s of others. I like to think my look is my own.

I took a long hiatus from the leggings trend and went back to wearing jeans, panty hose with skirts, that sort of thing… what I was comfortable with. I think a big part of my hiatus was from simply hearing the negative remarks that other girls around me were receiving (whether they were aware of it or not) about them being too big to be wearing those, or that their shirt wasn’t long enough to cover their bums… I think I was subconsciously afraid of having those same comments said about me.

I have recently decided to restock some fun leggings to reintroduce them into my style. I had picked up a bunch of pairs for $2.50 during an 80% off sale at Ardene. I decided to be smart this time around and go for a large size because they stretch and often in those “youth” stores their sizing is not meant for an adult. My safe size is always Medium, for these leggings I thought at least I buy too big I can take them in. I even got a pair that were XL…. lo and behold, they all fit perfectly! My repeated lesson: never go by sizes!!

For a friend’s birthday dinner I decided to dress a little more stylish but with a sleek, girl’s night meets pastel sort of feel. I tried out a pair of black reptile print leggings from my pre-xmas purchase, over top of a pair that are fleece lined for warmth! I had thrifted this top recently from Forever 21 which is a large so it has more flow than a fitted one. Instead of going dark with a black jacket I decided to punch up the mint with one of my favourite spring blazers from H&M. Adding some assorted gold and mint jewellery I felt like a million bucks ready to celebrate.

Striped Maxi

Xhilaration MaxiDon’t you love half price deals?! I picked up this gorgeous maxi by Xhilaration yesterday at Value Village for their two day super savers sale for only $5! It was one of those daring days when I just had to have it, no interest in trying it on because quite frankly, I figured I could alter it if need be. When I put it on for work in the morning I was beyond thrilled that it fits perfectly! Not a single alteration required!!

Now I know Xhilaration is available for pretty cheap at Target so I kept that in mind when thinking about the price… but for $5? You don’t have to think too hard! To finish the look I paired it with bright turquoise accessories and new go-to Wild Diva gladiator sandals.

Oversized SweaterBecause I work in an air-conditioned environment, I came prepared with an alterative look: an over sized black knit sweater top!

Parisian Inspired Looks

blackwhitepinstripesRight now black and white stripes are HUGE in my summer wardrobe! Anything with stripes that comes into the store I get all giggly! If you’re like me and you’ve always been afraid of stripes, fear no longer! I’ve put together three looks recently that are simple, fun and Parisian inspired that show how you can easily wear stripes – if they are the right stripes!

This top is a beautiful long sleeved dark navy and white striped number by Jones New York – I was a sucker for the gold button detail on the shoulders! Black capris by Le Chateau, low heel wedges by American Eagle paired with red acccessories! This look was extremely flattering especially for my wide hips! Who knew?

blackwhiteredparisian 20140618-180645.jpg

One of my faves lately, a long pinstripe maxi skirt with no label, white tshirt by Reitmans (again with shoulder buttons!), mini belt, new flats from ACo and mixed gold white and black bangles. Now this is everyone’s favourite new dress by La Classe Couture, although painfully short, I simply chopped a pair of black leggings into shorts and voila! I have been painting flats lately and these used to be coral but was itching for a pair of red ones. Couldn’t find any at the Ardene or thrifting so I decided to paint these up!

Black, White and Gold

Black, White & GoldI like to refer to this look as “edgy meets high fashion”! I will admit this outfit didn’t come all that easily as it was probably the tenth outfit I attempted to assemble that morning! Things don’t always fall into place but I am exceptionally thrilled with how this look turned out in the end. Due to my 5’2 stature I did need to do some hemming to this maxi skirt before I could wear it. Tall girls need things longer, short girls need things shorter. Sigh!

Gold Coin Necklace
I was unsure for probably two weeks about what would work with this skirt due to it’s black and white pinstripe. I originally thought a bright coloured blouse or shirt but none of those were quite right. I then decided to paw through my tops one by one and found this black one with gold dots. Although the dots are subtle I think it is a very cute mix of patterns.

American Eagle Low Heel Wedges I thrifted these fabulous American Eagle Outfitters low heel wedge pumps last week in the children’s section of Value Village – only $3.99! As depressing as it is for me to sift through the sparkles and Hannah Montana sandals, occasionally I do find the perfect gems such as these and of course my favourite gemstone toe flats by GAP Kids. Oh and yes I did notice that the sole of these shoes match the skirt perfectly but it certainly was not planned!
