Dress For Yourself

Kismet DressThere are days when we try very hard to get dressed, be fashionable and feel confident but it simply doesn’t work. I have these every now and again, usually due to the realization the outfit will be too warm or too cold, which then sets me into a frustrated state trying to come up with something more appropriate. On this particular morning, I had let some negative remarks made by others (jealous perhaps) get to me and it completely brought me down. I had curled my hair, then heard their negative opinion regarding my hair in my head – I ended up washing it out. I styled up my outfit, then heard the negative comments about the jeans not being their favourite. All these road blocks just from hearing other people’s opinions that were not my own.

I try to promote dressing well in general. I’m not trying to say what you should or shouldn’t wear, but rather help those that need inspiration on how to style the pieces you have or clothing you like. Maybe the jeans you’re wearing aren’t your friend’s favourite, but the point is, they’re yours. They don’t realize you like them, you like the colour, you like the way they feel and how you feel when you wear them. People are very opinionated.

This outfit came from a morning of tears and frustration, negative remarks I overcame with a sense of pride and accomplishment. I was given this green and light pink print dress by Kismet a few months ago in hopes I would be able to create something with it. I decided to try it on and wouldn’t you know it – aside from the length it was actually a very flattering dress! To my surprise I instantly felt more slim, the lumps and bumps were minimized by the wild print… I plunked down at the sewing machine and took it up a few inches to a more flattering length and voila!

I had not worn my pink Danier leather jacket since last spring but I would need a warmer layer for at the store. It really did wonders to pull the pink out from the dress! Styled up with a cozy knit scarf and my DIY leg warmers! I had this American Eagle sweater for a few years – I tried wearing it a few times but ultimately it was too short and probably shrunk. I hung on to it for no particular reason, maybe thinking one day I’d be a size 3 again – but in a matter of seconds, the decision was made and leg warmers were made! A quick stitch around the edge to hold the yarn together and chopped the sleeve away from the sweater. Done and done!

Jackets: The Finishing Touch!

We all have our wardrobe must-haves, one of mine is a variety of blazers and jackets. I work in a clothing store and I find my body cannot stay warm regardless of the season, either its the bone-chilling air conditioning or the furnace doesn’t heat the room I’m working in. Blazers are a definitely must for work, then I can take them off should that magical day occur when I am warm!

Premade Rips & Clearance Racks

Thrifting at The Post
I have no idea how I missed posting this Daily Dig as I felt like a million bucks in it. The day I put this outfit together I was heading off to meet a friend for tea and thrifting at The Post, a new location to add to my shopping adventures. The weather was mild but chilly enough to still require a jacket.

Because it was Saturday, I finally opened one of the large boxes Mom had shipped to me full of my clothes that I had set aside as a “ship to me later”. Inside was this khaki green blazer I had found a very long time ago that I wore a lot a few years ago – then it sat lonely in my closet for a few in between and now its back in regular use. Funny how that works! So the jacket compliments the Kismet scarf perfectly making the look a little more vintage chic.

I have always shunned the “premade” ripped jeans look, in fact I’ve made a point of always wearing clothing that is in perfect condition. But I was losing weight and found myself tired of yanking up my jeans day in and day out. I dragged myself to the mall, got very lost inside its walls looking for a deal, a clearance rack… anything that was not going to break my bank. After many failed attempts, a lot of mirror-less changerooms later, I stumbled upon Garage. I’m not particularly a fan but I thought I should at least try while in the mood. Not even the “mood”, just determined to find something I could fit into.

I tried many pairs of skinny leg pants in bright colours, pastels – regular blue denim with very little luck. Finally I decided on these that were on clearance for $10. A lot of stretch; not too skinny; light blue denim and I would convert my long-standing anti-rip mentality to acceptance. As it would happen they are a very modern, almost edgy addition to this outfit. Paired with clean white flats that buckle at the ankle and my off the shoulder sequin sparkle sweater.

H&M Emerald Green Dress

H&M Dress H&M Dress

Every now and again we come across amazing finds that become a staple in our wardrobe. People ask me all the time where I get things but it just makes me laugh, about 90% of the pieces in my closet (save for my underwear!) are thrift. It’s rare that I even go into a “real” store! This particular gem was a “grab first, analyze later” piece. Found it rummaging through the dress rack and my jaw dropped. It’s an absolutely stunning number by H&M with a sequined neckline.

Like I say all the time, I have yet to see anything like it. It’s slightly formal for most people but when has that ever phased me? Beautiful emerald green – my favourite! I look forward to next year’s thrifting adventures when all the girls get rid of their popular “in” pieces from this year… with any luck I’ll have a wide variety of this green to choose from come next January!

Normally I like to wear my nude, peep-toe heels with this outfit but seeing as I’m sitting at my desk all day I just opted for black flats. To give it more of an edge, I paired it with my new addition – black pleather biker jacket. Surprisingly when I got to the office I noticed another girl had a bright coloured dress on, royal blue – with a similar black jacket! Seemed to be the outfit or style of the day!

Singles Awareness Day

Valentine's Day

SAD aka Singles Awareness Day aka Valentines Day.

At the office today was a special contest to win prizes if you wear pink or red. I realized I had worn most of my vibrant pinks and corals earlier in the week so I stared blankly at my closet wondering what to wear. After pawing through I realized I had a lot of vintage pastel pink I could wear.

The top is a very unique spaghetti strap blouse with ruffles. Such a unique piece that I go months without wearing because I conveniently forget how sweet it is! Not to mention I obtained the same colour leather jacket late last year! It is certainly a lot easier to style now!

For jewellery I wore my fancy glass and antique brass set as it really pulled out the pink accents.

The “Wow” Factor

St. Patrick's DayMy not-so-impressive outfit today scored me a prize for St. Patrick’s Day at the office! Who knew! Honestly on my drive to work this morning I seriously debated even posting today’s attire as its so unimpressive. Just going for a lot of green and simple. I picked up this emerald green top at Value Village last night so I’d have something casual to wear (I had contemplated wearing my emerald green dress from H&M but its a bit formal). It’s quite big on me but I have every intention on stitching it up into a more exciting top one of these evenings! Can’t get passed the colour – I just love it!
