Show Me The Denim!

13254522_869579383171868_3443448951467857891_nNow that the warm weather has finally arrived, along with it comes air conditioning! Haha we seem to go from one extreme to the other – personally I am not a fan of AC at all because you wait from October to May to have nice weather and the first thing you do is say “Ugh its hot turn on the AC”…

I have always liked jean jackets when paired with really feminine outfits. For years I was without one and resorted to cardigans but I think they look sloppy on me, I need more structure. I had found one from Cleo, a 3/4 length sleeve with sparkle buttons last year which wasn’t my favourite but it would do for the time being. Recently I found two fabulous jackets, a cropped version (cheap by Digital) and a full length dark denim by Parasuco.

Styling these is so easy, it actually allows me to wear almost any dress underneath whether to dress down or dress up, sometimes make it more country – I even dropped the word Coachella the other day but I was quickly corrected with a “no no far less effort, not the forced look of Coachella!” I find dresses to be the most comfortable thing in my closet currently. I was not built for shorts so I’ve removed them from my summer wardrobe and went back to my beloved dresses.

I snatched up this adorable lavender floral dress by Bar III last week, did a few alterations to make it fit better in the shoulders – story of my life! My lavender statement necklace finally matches something yay!

St. Patrick’s Day Style

Mar17As much as I love green, in fact, I’m fairly certain if I had to choose one colour green would be my favourite. When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day I feel like the green required to celebrate should be a vibrant one, not a soft sage or army green as per my usual. Every now and then I have a great emerald green shirt or dress… currently it looks like all I have is this plaid shirt.

Facebook would remind me today that last year on this same day I wore it with the same jewellery and a pair of jeans… you could think of it another way, this cheap Old Navy shirt lasted an entire year in my closet! Holy moly. If you look back even further you’d see I paired it with a shorter feminine skirt that was also this rich royal blue. I am certainly not a fan of plaid but this one I quite like.

It is comfortable and very easy to make very fashionable. It may also be because of how rich the colours are that it goes so well with my skirts. I always receive compliments when I style it up with this thrifted Stella & Dot necklace and earring set. I had no idea when I picked it up for about $5 at Value Village a few years ago that it was S&D… and a celebrity endorsed one as well! I believe it was Cameron Diaz that was pictured wearing this beauty. To this day its one of my favourites.

The Many Shades of Blush

feb5finalHow long would you hang on to a unique item in hopes of eventually finding the perfect pieces to match it? 6 months this vintage skirt has been hanging in my closet, front and centre, in hopes of one day finding a matching top. A handful of hopefuls came home but went back out as I searched for the right shade of blush to match this skirt. Sure you could put other shades with it, but every one I tried bothered me. It wasn’t quite right and for this type of skirt I felt like it had to be a certain… je ne sais quoi.

Now I don’t necessarily feel like this top is “the one” I do feel it was a close enough match to warrant a test run in real life rather than being sentenced to serve lonely days in my closet. This sleeveless crochet style top by RW&Co was brought in for consignment last week and I thought, “maybe, just maybe” this would be the right colour. Sure enough it was!

I kept the look low key with a long wrapped scarf and matching earrings (I do have the matching necklace but I thought that would be a bit much.) My nude pumps by Nine West go with everything and I am saddened to know that their time is running out. They were very worn when I got them in the summer and now your foot rolls like there is no sole left. Sigh. One day I will find another pair and you will be mine.

Light Rose

lightpinkgrey There was a year, not too long ago, that I went to the thrift store and picked up a whole bunch of sweater tunics, I think about the time leggings first started being popular. I have since grown a strong dislike of them as I am just too curvy and its not a flattering look on me. However, every year I cleanse my closet and wonder if I should get rid of them or if I’m going to wear them… if they are frumpy or flattering… They are an item that I both love and hate.

I find this light rose one to be the only one I actually wear as it’s light, but could be warm if layered up nicely. It might be the first time I’ve worn it this season, because I finally found the perfect scarf to pair it with! This beauty came into the store this week, not quite long enough for infinity – but really attractive as a full knotted. Best of all this soft rose colour matches my nude pumps almost perfectly!

Neutrals & Denim

denimivorymixTo be perfectly honest, sometimes I just find the outfit to match the jewellery! I have often suggested this to our customers at the Store. They love a necklace but they have no idea what they would wear with it, same goes for a pair of boots. Yes they are a statement, but there is always a ton of different outfits that can match!

This outfit I put together for an evening holiday show I was participating in with my new line of jewellery OOAK. I wore it to a previous show with a royal blue dress and oatmeal coloured blazer – but I didn’t want to repeat in case we had return shoppers. So this style is more casual, but made to look dressy with the belted waist and pumps.

Modern Business Wear

businesswear2My least favourite term is “business casual” as really this could mean a lot of things to different people. For me the typical dress pant, fitted solid colour shirt and blazer makes for one heck of a boring outfit. So I’d like to show you my twist on the business look!

My philosophy is, if you have the basics – all you need is a variety of beautiful blouses! A simple long sleeve black blazer that fits to a “t” should be a staple in your wardrobe. For me, I go for a skinny leg dark black jegging instead of a wider leg dress pant based on my shape. It creates a more flattering look for my wide hips and bum if I go narrow toward my ankle. The Boyfriend Blazer

forever21boyfriendblazer Let me tell you about this blazer.

This unique boyfriend blazer by Forever 21 sat in our racks for two months, untouched, lonesome and without cause. Every now and then I am puzzled when things I think are exceptionally fashionable are not touched on these racks to the point where I try them on just to see if there is something wrong with it. Maybe its not sewn correctly, perhaps the fit is off somehow.

I didn’t touch this blazer originally because of my skin tone, hearing endlessly by women in the store saying “its not my colour” or “it won’t look good with my skin”… things I’ve always believed are total malarky. I put it on and right away a few of my employees stopped and ushered a soft “Wow!” as I looked at it in the mirror. Yes wow indeed. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, its a beautiful blush colour, very soft fabric and the cut is perfect for my shape.

Maybe the problem all along was that I was the Cinderella, and didn’t realize it.

I think the main reason that people don’t touch boyfriend blazers is they are unsure how to wear them. Yes they are an oversized look, you see the teenagers wearing oversized bulky sweaters and most of the time – yeah they do look frumpy. But these are tailored jackets, they are not too big or “oversized” but rather styled to look less formal than your traditional double breasted blazer.

There are many ways to wear them without ending up in frumpy-town, I’ve listed some great articles below. For me I styled it in such a way that I would deem “trendy”. Ripped boyfriend jeans a la Gap; nude pumps by Nine West; a simple white tshirt and a long rose quartz necklace made by yours truly.

I was very impressed with how this look turned out its definitely one of my favourites. I was even asked by Gap Yorkdale on Instagram if they could share!

Here are a few great posts on how to style this awesome blazer:

Neutrals for Fall

ericalexandreskirt As you are well aware, I’m not often one for neutrals or dark palettes. When this skirt caught my eye I think it was more of the fabric than colour, the soft texture and the feel of it on my body. In the fall and winter seasons I do add a blend of neutral outfits into my wardrobe as some days you just don’t feel like being too bold but rather more focused on comfort and warmth.

This particular day wasn’t overly warm in late September so I thought I would embrace the season everyone was pushing on me and styled up this Eric Alexandre skirt. To give it some punch I paired it with my stone 3/4 sleeve blazer, Nine West pumps and my own one of a kind jewellery.

Ladies have often commented on this particular set and no, I will never sell it. It was one of the first complicated-time-consuming-ready to rip your hair out – pieces I ever made. Each brushed coin is hand wrapped to dangle from the chain. It has all three pieces to match, bracelet, earrings and necklace. It truly is unique and is the perfect colouring for this outfit.

Blazers Rock My World

brightcherryblazer All year round blazers are a staple in my wardrobe. They are so easy to wear whether you leave it open or buttoned, cuffs long or rolled. I really enjoy layering accessories when it comes to my outfits combining scarves with long beaded necklaces with a bright blazer over top. At The Store we find blazers to be a difficult sell. The customers seem to like them when they see me wearing them with a pair of skinny jeans and scarves, but they just don’t know how to style them on their own.

This bright coral pink blazer by Mexx is my latest addition to my collection. Brand new brought in for consignment, with its adorable grey and white poka dot interior adds that little something extra. Its vibrant colours like this that make me feel bright all year round – even after the rest of society converts to black and grey, I’m still strutting around with bright pinks, corals and turquoise!

Although I can’t wear them all day long, these Nine West nude pumps are a sexy addition to a casual outfit like this. Its amazing how stylish an outfit can become with a little heel and pointed toe!

Orange Sherbet

Zara BlazerI am known for my love of scarves and pashminas, rarely am I seen without them! Lately I have been loving this pale sherbet orange colour, it keeps popping up during my thrifting adventures! Last week this beautiful scarf came into the store – it didn’t get far!

I picked up an Old Navy shift dress for less than $10 at Value Village last week, but even at a size medium, my curves were just too much for it. I loved the print regardless and decided to shorten it into a top. That was easy enough to alter, but something was still wrong in the chest area. It was pulling, but not in a way that would suggest it was too small – but in the shoulder and arm area. I cannot understand why but more and more tops are being made with exceptionally small sleeves!
Old Navy Alteration
The easy fix to this conundrum was simply to chop the sleeves off! No problem at all and now I have a really cute cami to wear under cardigans and blazers!

Another great find is this sequined jacket by Zara! I spent more than I typically do on this sort of thing, but knowing how expensive the brand is, I decided it was unique enough to be worth the whopping $15 🙂 I paired it today with a super soft denim shirt by GAP, my sherbet orange pashmina and new thrifted GAP jeans! Wouldn’t you know it, the new Nine West flats were an excellent match to the blue in the jacket!
