My Style

I was once a girl that always felt awkward and uncomfortable, trying so hard to follow these fashion trends but never actually went to the mall or paid close attention to what the magazines were showing. I just liked clothing piece by piece, not how they fit into any sort of style or trend at the time. To this day my feelings about it remain the same, each item I find is unique and it doesn’t matter if its not from this season’s collection.

This is an outfit I could never in a million years imagine putting together, but I did. This light pink furry vest came into the store and I was captivated by it. I’d never liked anything furry up until this particular day and what can I say, I had to have it. Its a soft light rosey pink which is one of my favourite colours lately so that may have everything to do with it – its not black.

“I stay true to myself and my style, and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original.” – Aaliyah

The dress is one of two matching spandex numbers I thrifted together, I believe an H&M or similar brand, one dark purple the other dark green. Now they both required alteration so that I could walk freely so I put a slit in the side of each on one side. The scarf was consigned not long after and it has just the right hint of plum and pink to work with this whole look and tie it all together in a not overwhelming sort of way. I mix the look up with a different dress or jewellery sometimes to keep it interesting, but its still a favourite.

I think I enjoy it so much because of exactly how unique it is, it follows no trends, no magazine clippings and no celebrity style. Its comfortable but edgy. It makes me feel super stylish and with that, I glow when I wear it to work. Its a statement for sure, a conversation starter at the very least. I don’t feel that I have any particular look, any signature style but everything I wear has a “me” look to it because of how its styled with other pieces, with the jewellery accents or the footwear. It all sort of works together in a Pamela-sort of way.

I follow no rules, I blend colours based on my accessories and I try out all kinds of ideas. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. The bottom line is thoroughly enjoying everything I wear.

Fun with Fashion

A regular customer came into the store last week and paused, she was trying to find the right words. “You’re dressing very… ” then she skipped finding a word to fill in and went to “…lately” yes I agree I have been dressing very “…” lately! I told her I was enjoying styling new outfits lately and she agreed it was really nice to see.

Yes it is nice to see when people dress up and look put together. I enjoy being complete with accessories and matching elements. I like to look like I thought about it when I chose my look. I care about these things.

I’m most sad when women bring in their clothing for consignment and say “I’m retired now so I don’t need any of this” which would make sense if it was clearly business attire, but its their every day nice casual wear. They get rid of all their dresses, all their jewellery, their “nicer” pieces. So what that tells me is women who retire resort to wearing sweat pants? Wearing athletic wear even though you haven’t seen a gym in ten years?

Clothing is an exciting thing we can wear over our bodies, why not love and enjoy every day with something that says wow! I like to feel my best, which comes from looking my best. I rarely leave the house dressed down, even when I am people still think I’m dressed up. There’s nothing better to me than styling a new outfit and have people say “that outfit looks amazing on you!”

I like to look at my clothing and say, this is such a nice top… I wonder if this will go with this… and it does! So many women hate to shop, and I get that. I hate to sit around watching Netflix. We all have things we do that we enjoy and no one else has to understand. It just makes me feel great to leave the house looking my best. It makes me sad however when our culture is looking more and more like we rolled out of bed and didn’t bother to change out of our pajamas. There’s a time and a place and that’s at home at bedtime.

Show Me The Denim!

13254522_869579383171868_3443448951467857891_nNow that the warm weather has finally arrived, along with it comes air conditioning! Haha we seem to go from one extreme to the other – personally I am not a fan of AC at all because you wait from October to May to have nice weather and the first thing you do is say “Ugh its hot turn on the AC”…

I have always liked jean jackets when paired with really feminine outfits. For years I was without one and resorted to cardigans but I think they look sloppy on me, I need more structure. I had found one from Cleo, a 3/4 length sleeve with sparkle buttons last year which wasn’t my favourite but it would do for the time being. Recently I found two fabulous jackets, a cropped version (cheap by Digital) and a full length dark denim by Parasuco.

Styling these is so easy, it actually allows me to wear almost any dress underneath whether to dress down or dress up, sometimes make it more country – I even dropped the word Coachella the other day but I was quickly corrected with a “no no far less effort, not the forced look of Coachella!” I find dresses to be the most comfortable thing in my closet currently. I was not built for shorts so I’ve removed them from my summer wardrobe and went back to my beloved dresses.

I snatched up this adorable lavender floral dress by Bar III last week, did a few alterations to make it fit better in the shoulders – story of my life! My lavender statement necklace finally matches something yay!

The Many Shades of Blush

feb5finalHow long would you hang on to a unique item in hopes of eventually finding the perfect pieces to match it? 6 months this vintage skirt has been hanging in my closet, front and centre, in hopes of one day finding a matching top. A handful of hopefuls came home but went back out as I searched for the right shade of blush to match this skirt. Sure you could put other shades with it, but every one I tried bothered me. It wasn’t quite right and for this type of skirt I felt like it had to be a certain… je ne sais quoi.

Now I don’t necessarily feel like this top is “the one” I do feel it was a close enough match to warrant a test run in real life rather than being sentenced to serve lonely days in my closet. This sleeveless crochet style top by RW&Co was brought in for consignment last week and I thought, “maybe, just maybe” this would be the right colour. Sure enough it was!

I kept the look low key with a long wrapped scarf and matching earrings (I do have the matching necklace but I thought that would be a bit much.) My nude pumps by Nine West go with everything and I am saddened to know that their time is running out. They were very worn when I got them in the summer and now your foot rolls like there is no sole left. Sigh. One day I will find another pair and you will be mine.

Craving Magenta

feb4final This is truly the colour of the season for me I am finding it in so many unique shades throughout the thrift stores. When I was a child a friend bought me a shirt this colour and I believe it may have been the only compliment from her I ever received – but she said this colour looked really nice on me. I must agree! Its that lovely dark pink!

This is a new look I’ve put together featuring two half price day pieces I found last month the top only needed a slight alteration. Unfortunately some of the cutest tops I’ve found in my travels I’ve left behind due to the style of the elastic band around the bottom for this “peasant” style… Looks good on no one by the way. Fortunately for me the elastic was not sewn into the hem so I could remove it with a small snip! My intention was to wear it tucked into a high waisted skirt so the bumpy bottom isn’t so much of an issue.feb4final2

I didn’t have to alter this skirt in any way and it fits really well because of the stretch. It also matches my pumps nicely! I picked up this multi layered necklace from The Store a few months ago, as it had sat in the display case not selling for a few months. I honestly can’t imagine why its a stunning Shopping Channel piece thats a bit on the dressy side that we had priced for just $20.

No bites. Often there are things that I love in the store that sit there without someone to love so I take it upon myself to see what’s wrong with it, why it hasn’t sold. Sometimes I end up absolutely loving it myself and have to introduce it to my wardrobe – other times I figure out right away it was a bad design.

However I think this pairing is absolutely gorgeous! I am always so thrilled with the vision I have for a look turns out better than expected!

Mad for Magenta

orangemagentamix I saw this top at Value Village once when shopping with my mother and a friend (whom I ran into while I was there go figure!) and as I recall its by Reitmans, a large. Unfortunately it was quite a big large in the shoulders but I began tinkering with it in the mirror at the end of an isle as my mother walks by and nods “Yup its do-able” … she knew what was going through my head.

I still find it amusing and somewhat rewarding that after 29 years I was able to teach my mother something instead of the reverse. In being gutsy and bold, I feel no risk in cutting into an item of clothing, no remorse if I start stitching this and that. Without knowing the official “rules” of sewing and alterations, I am able to do things like this. Now more and more my mother is excited to tell me she altered something thinking like I would!

Just the other day she was fussing with a dress, one of these fabulous multi print – mixed fabric numbers by Desigual – unfortunately with our 5’2 height they can be very hard to pull off without looking even shorter. I came over and started analyzing it after she gave me the few thoughts she had. I grabbed it on both sides below the waist and hemmed it with pins temporarily. “Just needs to go up here so you don’t lose all the bottom details”… “Ha!” she says, “I knew you’d know how to fix it.”

This top wasn’t all that complicated to alter. Yes its a knit, and we don’t “alter” sweaters… this girl does.

Based on having very narrow shoulders and a small frame, I simply put somewhat of a dart down the back of the shoulder equally on both sides. When I wore it to work no one even realized that changes had been made. Yes looking at this photo you can see that the original seams don’t line up the way a normal shoulder does, but its something that only I would notice. Paired with this fun infinity scarf and my favourite bright orange GAP skirt – couldn’t help but wear my magenta pumps to be super matchy-matchy!

Little Jack Dress

pinkjackdress I have the unique situation of seeing beautiful clothing on a regular basis by the job position that I hold. Now our shoppers love to comment that we must have huge closets, that we can’t possibly have pay cheques working here, etc. Our response is always the same because its something people don’t consider: it doesn’t always fit us. The shoppers always find that hard to believe, but we don’t necessarily need it just because it fits and looks good. Like you, we have bills to pay!

There are however, moments when certain consignors walk through the door and my heart pounds a little faster. Its that thrill of knowing there’s a great potential for some exciting treasures to be found by this woman walking towards you. Now this isn’t to say every time they bring things in to consign I end up with no pay cheque, but I’m always excited to see what unique things they have discovered in the “real” stores. One woman buys lovely things that she hardly wears. Any time she walks in, she’s on break at work, hard hat and painted jeans. But her clothing is beautiful brand names, fitted dresses and pristine jeans.

One afternoon this particular consignor brought in her usual load, and this stunning hot pink dress was in the mix. I can’t say I didn’t move quickly to get the items priced so I could try it on! This gorgeous rich pink print dress by Jack captured my complete attention. I was so thrilled at how beautifully it fit, no alterations required!

Neon Pink

hotpinkblackscarf I think I say this every day, but this colour is my new favourite! In fact, anything neon, much like my latest purse thrift! Although my skin tone is not exactly natural (thank you bronzer!) anything fluorescent or neon really pops against it. I received a ton of compliments on this outfit because of its bold colour.

To all the women that feel you need to go dark in the winter, I give you this outfit! I expect all year long I will be promoting thrilling colour and bold statement pieces. Why go dark when you can go bright?!

Last week I picked up this neon knit top by Gap at the Store, which I had just brought with me in case I was cold – but it ended up being a great addition to this outfit! Underneath it all is a half price white blouse by Banana Republic (from Value Village’s half price sale this month) and a simple black pencil skirt. This super fun scarf was also in my bag of goodies from the half price sale, only $2!

Blended Textures

lightrose I was super impressed with myself after discovering these two pieces in my closet were almost exactly the same shade of pale pink! I am trying to be more adventurous in my pattern and fabric mixing and this is a great instance of where it worked out beautifully! I adored this Antilia Femme blouse I found at Value Village some weeks ago. I am really feeling the dusty rose and gold combination this year!

The skirt is by Joe Fresh (I know right?!) consigned at the Store a couple months ago before the weather was warm enough to wear it. It certainly is a favourite of mine not only because of the colour but the lace-crochet style it has. I love dainty feminine details don’t you?

Blazers Rock My World

brightcherryblazer All year round blazers are a staple in my wardrobe. They are so easy to wear whether you leave it open or buttoned, cuffs long or rolled. I really enjoy layering accessories when it comes to my outfits combining scarves with long beaded necklaces with a bright blazer over top. At The Store we find blazers to be a difficult sell. The customers seem to like them when they see me wearing them with a pair of skinny jeans and scarves, but they just don’t know how to style them on their own.

This bright coral pink blazer by Mexx is my latest addition to my collection. Brand new brought in for consignment, with its adorable grey and white poka dot interior adds that little something extra. Its vibrant colours like this that make me feel bright all year round – even after the rest of society converts to black and grey, I’m still strutting around with bright pinks, corals and turquoise!

Although I can’t wear them all day long, these Nine West nude pumps are a sexy addition to a casual outfit like this. Its amazing how stylish an outfit can become with a little heel and pointed toe!

Dress For Yourself

Kismet DressThere are days when we try very hard to get dressed, be fashionable and feel confident but it simply doesn’t work. I have these every now and again, usually due to the realization the outfit will be too warm or too cold, which then sets me into a frustrated state trying to come up with something more appropriate. On this particular morning, I had let some negative remarks made by others (jealous perhaps) get to me and it completely brought me down. I had curled my hair, then heard their negative opinion regarding my hair in my head – I ended up washing it out. I styled up my outfit, then heard the negative comments about the jeans not being their favourite. All these road blocks just from hearing other people’s opinions that were not my own.

I try to promote dressing well in general. I’m not trying to say what you should or shouldn’t wear, but rather help those that need inspiration on how to style the pieces you have or clothing you like. Maybe the jeans you’re wearing aren’t your friend’s favourite, but the point is, they’re yours. They don’t realize you like them, you like the colour, you like the way they feel and how you feel when you wear them. People are very opinionated.

This outfit came from a morning of tears and frustration, negative remarks I overcame with a sense of pride and accomplishment. I was given this green and light pink print dress by Kismet a few months ago in hopes I would be able to create something with it. I decided to try it on and wouldn’t you know it – aside from the length it was actually a very flattering dress! To my surprise I instantly felt more slim, the lumps and bumps were minimized by the wild print… I plunked down at the sewing machine and took it up a few inches to a more flattering length and voila!

I had not worn my pink Danier leather jacket since last spring but I would need a warmer layer for at the store. It really did wonders to pull the pink out from the dress! Styled up with a cozy knit scarf and my DIY leg warmers! I had this American Eagle sweater for a few years – I tried wearing it a few times but ultimately it was too short and probably shrunk. I hung on to it for no particular reason, maybe thinking one day I’d be a size 3 again – but in a matter of seconds, the decision was made and leg warmers were made! A quick stitch around the edge to hold the yarn together and chopped the sleeve away from the sweater. Done and done!

Pink Saturday!

20140719-224932.jpgToday once again I felt very feminine and wanted uplifting colours to go with the white denim shorts I had just altered – stay tuned for the tutorial! I opted for a light weight pink blouse by Joe Fresh, combined with a floral cardigan by St. John’s Bay.

This I so far the first floral cardi I’ve been able to thrift that is modern but trendy at the same time. I haven’t worn hot pink in quite some time! I was just running errands today so I didn’t put too much thought into the outfit, although sometimes I think that’s when looks are most successful!

I received quite a few compliments on my outfit today from complete strangers! It’s so uplifting when someone goes out of their way to tell you something positive. It stays with you for the rest of the day! It has always been a goal of mine, call it good karma if you will, to compliment one person every day. Share the love!
