My Style

I was once a girl that always felt awkward and uncomfortable, trying so hard to follow these fashion trends but never actually went to the mall or paid close attention to what the magazines were showing. I just liked clothing piece by piece, not how they fit into any sort of style or trend at the time. To this day my feelings about it remain the same, each item I find is unique and it doesn’t matter if its not from this season’s collection.

This is an outfit I could never in a million years imagine putting together, but I did. This light pink furry vest came into the store and I was captivated by it. I’d never liked anything furry up until this particular day and what can I say, I had to have it. Its a soft light rosey pink which is one of my favourite colours lately so that may have everything to do with it – its not black.

The dress is one of two matching spandex numbers I thrifted together, I believe an H&M or similar brand, one dark purple the other dark green. Now they both required alteration so that I could walk freely so I put a slit in the side of each on one side. The scarf was consigned not long after and it has just the right hint of plum and pink to work with this whole look and tie it all together in a not overwhelming sort of way. I mix the look up with a different dress or jewellery sometimes to keep it interesting, but its still a favourite.

I think I enjoy it so much because of exactly how unique it is, it follows no trends, no magazine clippings and no celebrity style. Its comfortable but edgy. It makes me feel super stylish and with that, I glow when I wear it to work. Its a statement for sure, a conversation starter at the very least. I don’t feel that I have any particular look, any signature style but everything I wear has a “me” look to it because of how its styled with other pieces, with the jewellery accents or the footwear. It all sort of works together in a Pamela-sort of way.

I follow no rules, I blend colours based on my accessories and I try out all kinds of ideas. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. The bottom line is thoroughly enjoying everything I wear.

The Many Shades of Blush

feb5finalHow long would you hang on to a unique item in hopes of eventually finding the perfect pieces to match it? 6 months this vintage skirt has been hanging in my closet, front and centre, in hopes of one day finding a matching top. A handful of hopefuls came home but went back out as I searched for the right shade of blush to match this skirt. Sure you could put other shades with it, but every one I tried bothered me. It wasn’t quite right and for this type of skirt I felt like it had to be a certain… je ne sais quoi.

Now I don’t necessarily feel like this top is “the one” I do feel it was a close enough match to warrant a test run in real life rather than being sentenced to serve lonely days in my closet. This sleeveless crochet style top by RW&Co was brought in for consignment last week and I thought, “maybe, just maybe” this would be the right colour. Sure enough it was!

I kept the look low key with a long wrapped scarf and matching earrings (I do have the matching necklace but I thought that would be a bit much.) My nude pumps by Nine West go with everything and I am saddened to know that their time is running out. They were very worn when I got them in the summer and now your foot rolls like there is no sole left. Sigh. One day I will find another pair and you will be mine.

Light Rose

lightpinkgrey There was a year, not too long ago, that I went to the thrift store and picked up a whole bunch of sweater tunics, I think about the time leggings first started being popular. I have since grown a strong dislike of them as I am just too curvy and its not a flattering look on me. However, every year I cleanse my closet and wonder if I should get rid of them or if I’m going to wear them… if they are frumpy or flattering… They are an item that I both love and hate.

I find this light rose one to be the only one I actually wear as it’s light, but could be warm if layered up nicely. It might be the first time I’ve worn it this season, because I finally found the perfect scarf to pair it with! This beauty came into the store this week, not quite long enough for infinity – but really attractive as a full knotted. Best of all this soft rose colour matches my nude pumps almost perfectly!

The Boyfriend Blazer

forever21boyfriendblazer Let me tell you about this blazer.

This unique boyfriend blazer by Forever 21 sat in our racks for two months, untouched, lonesome and without cause. Every now and then I am puzzled when things I think are exceptionally fashionable are not touched on these racks to the point where I try them on just to see if there is something wrong with it. Maybe its not sewn correctly, perhaps the fit is off somehow.

I didn’t touch this blazer originally because of my skin tone, hearing endlessly by women in the store saying “its not my colour” or “it won’t look good with my skin”… things I’ve always believed are total malarky. I put it on and right away a few of my employees stopped and ushered a soft “Wow!” as I looked at it in the mirror. Yes wow indeed. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, its a beautiful blush colour, very soft fabric and the cut is perfect for my shape.

Maybe the problem all along was that I was the Cinderella, and didn’t realize it.

I think the main reason that people don’t touch boyfriend blazers is they are unsure how to wear them. Yes they are an oversized look, you see the teenagers wearing oversized bulky sweaters and most of the time – yeah they do look frumpy. But these are tailored jackets, they are not too big or “oversized” but rather styled to look less formal than your traditional double breasted blazer.

There are many ways to wear them without ending up in frumpy-town, I’ve listed some great articles below. For me I styled it in such a way that I would deem “trendy”. Ripped boyfriend jeans a la Gap; nude pumps by Nine West; a simple white tshirt and a long rose quartz necklace made by yours truly.

I was very impressed with how this look turned out its definitely one of my favourites. I was even asked by Gap Yorkdale on Instagram if they could share!

Here are a few great posts on how to style this awesome blazer:

Blended Textures

lightrose I was super impressed with myself after discovering these two pieces in my closet were almost exactly the same shade of pale pink! I am trying to be more adventurous in my pattern and fabric mixing and this is a great instance of where it worked out beautifully! I adored this Antilia Femme blouse I found at Value Village some weeks ago. I am really feeling the dusty rose and gold combination this year!

The skirt is by Joe Fresh (I know right?!) consigned at the Store a couple months ago before the weather was warm enough to wear it. It certainly is a favourite of mine not only because of the colour but the lace-crochet style it has. I love dainty feminine details don’t you?

Big Buddha Poncho

Rose Sparkle PonchoNow the idea of this month is to shop in one’s own closet, however there are a few exceptions to the rule – its damn near impossible to do a “no-shop” when you work in fashion retail!! 🙂

Although I have been practising being very brutal with myself, thinking over items for considerable time before making a decision: Will I wear this? Is it worth the price? Will it go with what I already own? How unique is it? Asking ourselves questions like this any time we are shopping is a great way to make your budget that much easier. Our homes are full of things we don’t need, impulse buys and things we should have returned to the store. All in all we shouldn’t be so lazy, think before you do things that effect your cash flow.

Rose Sparkle PonchoI slipped up at the store (for my No Shop September) when this poncho style top came in, but everything about it screams me: the rosey coral tones, the hint of sparkle, the unique-edgy-ness of it all. For $10 I thought it would be a good idea to snatch up something to wear to work when the season starts to change.

Thrifted Purses

I will admit I haven’t bothered to look at the purse rack at Value Village since the Kingston store rearranged their racks. I’m still not a huge fan of the layout as it messes up my “flow” if you know what I mean. I would prefer to be far away from the children’s clothing and toys if I had my way, its just too chaotic! Anywho, I happened to be rounding the corner of one of the shoe aisles and a lovely dusty turquoise bag caught my eye.

Happy Accidents

Le Chateau DressTo the untrained eye, this is just an adorable pleated skirt. Now let me fill you in with the story behind it.

I am guilty of not often bothering to try outfits on at the store, usually the reason I do spend the time is because I think the price might not be worth it. This particular dress by Le Chateau I did take the time to try on. I was instantly in love with the bottom of the dress with the three rows of adorable pleats.

Well the dress fit just fine in the store but I wasn’t too crazy about how the sleeves felt. I get home try it on again and decide that the sleeves needed to be redesigned. I spent about an hour first thing in the morning adjusting the sleeves, essentially removing them altogether and adding the design elements back on afterward.

Once the sleeves were complete I tried it on ready to wear to work. It was like the top half had doubled in size. A thought occurred: I had tried it on wearing two tank tops and a thicker padded bra. If this was to fit I’d need a pair of DD’s which isn’t happening any time soon! But I was still infatuated with the bottom, so in typical Pam style, I grabbed the scissors and make a drastic design decision.

Within moments I had created the beginning of a vest and skirt both cute but in a whole new way. At this point I was going to be late for work if I didn’t sort this out so my quick and easy solution for this new skirt was to pin the unfinished-freshly-cut top to a thick belt. Voila! Totally cute and one of a kind pleated skirt.

You’ll never guess how many compliments I received all day long. Now when anyone comments I have a great story to go along with it!

Singles Awareness Day

Valentine's Day

SAD aka Singles Awareness Day aka Valentines Day.

At the office today was a special contest to win prizes if you wear pink or red. I realized I had worn most of my vibrant pinks and corals earlier in the week so I stared blankly at my closet wondering what to wear. After pawing through I realized I had a lot of vintage pastel pink I could wear.

The top is a very unique spaghetti strap blouse with ruffles. Such a unique piece that I go months without wearing because I conveniently forget how sweet it is! Not to mention I obtained the same colour leather jacket late last year! It is certainly a lot easier to style now!

For jewellery I wore my fancy glass and antique brass set as it really pulled out the pink accents.
