Neon Yellow

13240032_863233000473173_3979429039166249576_nHave I told you how much I love yellow recently? Well let me tell you again! Two years ago I would have grimaced at the thought of adding this colour to my wardrobe, after years of listening to the old wives tales about what colours you can or can’t wear I just assumed no one could wear yellow. Since throwing out the nonsense tales of what I can and cannot wear I decided I would wear whatever I wanted, including this colour. Why the sudden love of neon? Who knows.

Maybe this colour has come back in a way I had never seen before, maybe it’s the right shade that does it for me. I picked up this dress a couple years ago with the plan of wearing it on holiday in Cuba. Unfortunately it did not make it out of the suitcase due to it being a thicker fabric – not suitable for such warm temperatures! But for spring with a little blazer, it’s just the right amount of warmth.

It’s also nice to be able to wear some of my brighter statement jewellery that I snatched up on eBay. The earrings have been redesigned so they are less bulky than the original set.

Hurry Up Spring!

feb19finalWorking in a retail setting that doesn’t follow the mall’s idea of “seasons” where they bring in the summer stock in March and Christmas stock in August… we operate based on the weather so naturally mall shoppers will walk in and assume we are taking inventory for the next season. Our shoppers like to be able to wear the item today, not a few months from now. My greatest peeve all year round is how much people complain about the weather, maybe its just in Canada where our weather fluctuates high and low but that seems to be everyone’s favourite topic. Right now with 5 foot high snowbanks and a record 45″ snow fall this week people are saying things like “well Spring is nearly here!” … sorry to be a realist but if you think Spring is nearly here I would suggest you look outside!

What is tough is following women on Instagram that live in the lower United States, as their seasons seem to look like summer all year round its only their choice of clothing colours that seem to change to define the season. Seems odd to me, if it was sunny and mild all year round you can bet I’d be wearing bright colours all the time!

feb19final2I am however, loving the pastels right now even though its not a reflection of the season. This week has been horrendous with a snow day, pipes freezing in -30 degree weather and daily snow shoveling is beyond exhausting. I wanted to try out a new look that wasn’t planned using this new scarf I picked up at The Store. I won’t go into another rant about the size the arms are being made on blouses but basically two I picked up recently that were MEDIUM I couldn’t fit my arms into – so the original outfit was spoiled – TWICE. New plan was to use another favourite that does fit.

Now matching the colour in the scarf was tricky because I wanted to wear pants (-19 you know) but black was just too stark. I picked up these jeggings by Mossimo in a mini thrift haul last week that have already been a bit of a challenge. I decided last minute to bring a belt as I haven’t worn them before and not too sure how they will stretch. Sure enough I barely got to work before they were falling down. Funny you know, how you can struggle to get these tight pants on in the morning then twenty minutes later they’re falling off your bum. It seems I just cannot win when it comes to pants. These will be the next pair that need to be taken in at the bum!

Sweater Dress Weather

bananarepublicsweaterdressI think I found one heck of a deal last week when I came across this sweater dress by Banana Republic at Value Village. Originally $12.99, minus 30% off coupon I got it for under $10. Banana Republic for under $10?! BR dresses run from $150 to $200 typically, even on sale they’re riding the fine line around $100.

As much as I can lose my faith in the pricing at VV, this one reassures me that there are still deals to be found! It had a few flaws on the arms which is common practice for sweaters they do get bally when they catch on things. Simple fix? Just snip them off!

This is the ultimate cozy winter dress, with a soft cowl style neck, long sleeves and ends just above the knee. A denim jacket adds that extra splash of colour on this overall tan palette, with a wrapped scarf for added detail.

Neutrals for Fall

ericalexandreskirt As you are well aware, I’m not often one for neutrals or dark palettes. When this skirt caught my eye I think it was more of the fabric than colour, the soft texture and the feel of it on my body. In the fall and winter seasons I do add a blend of neutral outfits into my wardrobe as some days you just don’t feel like being too bold but rather more focused on comfort and warmth.

This particular day wasn’t overly warm in late September so I thought I would embrace the season everyone was pushing on me and styled up this Eric Alexandre skirt. To give it some punch I paired it with my stone 3/4 sleeve blazer, Nine West pumps and my own one of a kind jewellery.

Ladies have often commented on this particular set and no, I will never sell it. It was one of the first complicated-time-consuming-ready to rip your hair out – pieces I ever made. Each brushed coin is hand wrapped to dangle from the chain. It has all three pieces to match, bracelet, earrings and necklace. It truly is unique and is the perfect colouring for this outfit.

Blackbirds

Blackbird Dress This morning was one of those rotten moments when you are upset with yourself, your body isn’t right and none of your clothing seems to fit the way you envision it. Being a visual girl, its exceptionally frustrating when I can see the look I want, but am unable to achieve it either because of the way it is fitting or maybe I’m missing one key accessory or clothing to work with the outfit. After several “failed” outfits I grabbed this beautiful dress out of the closet because I knew it was comfortable and easy to match due to its limited colour palette.

Not as vibrant as I like to be normally but based on the rough morning I was having I thought this was the safest bet. This is the first time I’ve worn the dress too! Paired with a black cardigan and matching tan belt, the look came together quite easy. The only downfall I experienced was the length of the dress due to my long body. Unfortunately I’ve been noticing an issue with things being too short more and more recently. Lucky for me, I am somewhat skilled with a sewing machine, needle and thread so I can adjust items as I see fit.

Next time I wear this outfit you’ll see the most recent adjustments I have made to make it longer!

Ottawa Thrifting – Round 2!

I spent my Sunday up in Ottawa once again checking out what a few Value Village stores had to offer before heading to a concert in Burnstown. It was rather successful if I do say so! I found a super cute vintage dress I plan to alter and a few vibrant skirts!

Fleshtone Blouse

Fleshtone Blouse Fleshtone Blouse

I may have forgotten my Daily Digs post this morning so I took two snapshots at work because of this blouse. Its very unique, as per the usual – found at Value Village on one of my first trips here in Medicine Hat. It’s a miserable snowy-slushy day today so I’ve gone more casual with a simple brown cardigan, jeans and tall brown boots. The blouse however is a lovely fleshtone tan with ruffles around the arm holes, gathered at the waist and beautiful sparkled embroidery around the neckline.

Half Price Day!

Thrift FindsI was super stoked to find out that Value Village was offering a pre-sale on Sunday for card holders instead of waiting for Monday’s public 50% off sale. I ended up parking illegally alongside several others as they still have not removed the mounds of ice and snow from weeks ago when it was actually winter in Medicine Hat. So a few parking spots were not available for use and their parking lot is way too small for the amount of shoppers!

I wasn’t there that long, I simply weaved through the areas I was most interested in such as the footwear, furniture, home decor and this time bedding. I only have one set of sheets for this new bed so I wanted to find some additional soft sheets as a backup so I could do laundry! I managed to find two of the fabric I was looking for (that stretchy soft tshirt fabric!) which ended up being about $6 for the two. Score!

Thrift Finds

In the shoe section I scored two pairs of super sweet low heel/wedge black shoes! Will post pics of those soon! Only $6 for two pairs of shoes… can’t beat that, especially in my size!

On the way to this Value Village adventure I realized my wallet was disintegrating, a not so surprising result with buying already heavily used wallets via thrift – but I got a good 6 months or so out of this one. I picked out a really neat robin’s egg blue wallet, flat with nice shape for only $3.99 – so I paid less than $2! I realized when I got home it was genuine leather too! Alongside this wallet I snagged a brand new Lug travel purse in bright orange for only $9.99! I only paid $5!

I picked up two dresses I had been eye-balling for a while as they were less than $5 by the end, and one top that I thought was super cute!

The New Living Room

Brown Suedette Couch Brown Suedette Couch

My latest addition to Apartment 302 is this brown suedette sectional couch. I have never seen anything like it but according to the woman that sold it to me, its from Ikea. I highly doubt this but either way I just wanted it for the fit. It is completely separate sections, each with a storage base and top. You can style it any way that you like, so if I moved or wanted to change up my space, I could easily rearrange each piece.

I found this fantastic item on Kijiji in Medicine Hat. Kijiji is a wonderful resource for thrifters. Not only is the service free, but its available in basically every city I’ve ever encountered!
